Magpie is a podcast and article player. You can use it on screen or control it by voice. If something is not working, or if any part of the app is difficult to use with VoiceOver, email hcndashwood@gmail.com.
Tap the microphone at the top right of any tab and say what you want, such as “subscribe to In Our Time” or “play the latest In Our Time”. You can also use Search in the Shows tab, then open an episode and play it on screen, or ask Siri without opening the app: “Play the latest In Our Time on Magpie”, or “Ask Magpie” to open the microphone.
Written articles from blogs and newsletters are read aloud with an Apple system voice, and they behave like any other audio: the lock-screen and headphone controls, playback speed and sleep timer all work, and Magpie remembers your place. Choose the voice under Magpie’s Settings tab; you can download higher-quality Apple voices in the iPhone Settings app under Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices. Every article also has an Open the original button that takes you to the page it came from.
Open the iPhone or iPad Settings app, choose Magpie, and check that Microphone and Speech Recognition are enabled. Under VoiceOver, focus the Ask Magpie control and double-tap when you are ready to speak; Magpie waits rather than listening over the screen reader's announcement.
Playback needs a network connection to the publisher's audio. If a publisher has removed an episode or its server is unavailable, try another episode and contact us with the show and episode title if the problem continues.
Sign out, change AI data sharing, or delete your account under Magpie's Settings tab. If you cannot open the app, see how to delete your account. Read the privacy policy for full details of the data Magpie uses and why.
